Practical Risk Assessment

Course Overview

 

The Management of Health and Safety at Work Regulations 1999 and other recent health and safety legislation requires employers to carry out risk assessments and to record those assessments in writing. This workshop provides a practical introduction into the principles of risk assessment, with particular emphasis on how those principles can be applied to typical workplace conditions.

 

On completion, delegates will have an appreciation of the principles of risk assessment and be able to apply the knowledge to assess most hazards and to find the information and support needed to tackle more complex assessments.

 

Aims and Objectives

 

On completion of this course, delegates will understand:

  • The process of risk assessment
  • Risk assessment recording and reviewing procedures

 

Course Covers

 

  • Legislation requiring Risk Assessment
  • Ownership and responsibility for risk assessment
  • What is Risk Assessment
    • Terminology: Hazard and risk, suitable and sufficient, hierarchy of controls, competent assessors
  • Risk Assessment Methodology:
    • Hazard Identification and sources of hazards –
      • Location Activities Environment and Equipment Hazards
      • Inspection of records – maintenance, repair, investigation reports etc
      • Employee feedback, conversations
    • Identifying those affected
    • Evaluation of risk and using the matrix
  • Identifying specific control measures, not making vague statements
  • Recording specific control measures for E.g. slips trips and falls, machine guarding, manual handling, driving at work Etc
  • Example documentation: risk assessment forms, completing the forms, cross referencing with other documentation, sources of information – where to get help
  • Practical Syndicate Exercise
