6 Construction Skills Certification Scheme (CSCS) Health and Safety Awareness Training

The Construction Skills Certification Scheme has been developed to identify the construction industry’s trained and experienced operatives and craftsmen. Completion of this course will enable individuals to further demonstrate their competence and so give confidence to the industry’s customers.

The Construction (Design and Management) Regulations 1994 require clients to appoint persons and companies that can demonstrate their competence.

The benefits for CSCS Card Holders are:

13 IOSH Managing Safely

Following discussions with many local companies we are finding that a four day block release course can be difficult for employers in relation to staff release.  Because of this we have decided to run our October IOSH Managing Safely course on a split basis over two weeks, thereby minimising the impact of staff release for training purposes.

This comprehensive four day course provides delegates with a basic introductory grounding in health and safety at work. It concentrates on training delegates to apply sound management principles to health and safety, the programme is divided into eight modules as follows:

IOSH Certificate

At the end of the course delegates are required to undertake a short test and an in-company post course project leading to the award of the IOSH certificate in Managing Safely for successful candidates. The project is carried out in the workplace and is of benefit to the delegate’s employer.

14 IOSH Managing Safely Re-certification Training

The aim of the re-certification course is to update delegates on key health and safety issues and best practice. This course is only for delegates who already hold the IOSH Managing Safely certificate, new delegates are still required to undertake the full four day course. As of April 2003, all certificates issued by IOSH will be printed with a

three-year expiry date. To remain accredited by IOSH all individuals will be required to renew their certification.

15 Safe Manual Handling

This one day course has been developed for office based staff.  It provides a firm foundation of basic knowledge on relevant safety issues.

19 IOSH Safety for Senior Executives

Aims to ensure that health and safety is appreciated by people at the most senior levels. The course should enable top executives to review policy and strategies, and, where necessary, introduce changes to make their organisation operate more safely.

The syllabus focuses on:

  • Health and safety as a main line management function, emanating from the top and descending management levels.
  • The financial implications of accidents and ill health caused by working conditions.
  • Current legislation, particularly the Health and Safety at Work etc Act and the Management of Health and Safety at Work Regulations, and other regulations relevant to the workplace.
  • Penalties for offences related to health and safety legislation, including the concept of corporate manslaughter.
  • Documentation and procedures to satisfy legislation.
  • The root causes of accidents.
  • The law’s shift in emphasis to a non-prescriptive approach based on the assessment of risk in terms of best current practice.
  • Basic principles of risk assessment.
  • The need to appoint competent people to advise on the health and safety function.

20 Scaffold Inspection

A one day course for Managers/Supervisors who are responsible for inspecting scaffolds

Aims and Objectives

21 Site Management Safety Training Scheme (SMSTS)

A nationally recognised five day course aimed at providing safety management training within the building and civil engineering industries for: Site Managers; Area Site Managers; Engineers; Sub-Contractors; Construction Company Directors and Managers.

Scheme and Syllabus

The Site Management Safety Training Scheme has the general aim of assisting site management and supervisory personnel to:

  • Manage health and safety on site in accordance with the current legal provisions and within the context of their management or supervisory role.
  • Develop an understanding of their responsibilities and accountability for site health, safety and welfare.
  • Recognise that a safe site is efficient, economical and productive.

Specific Aims

More specifically, course delegates should benefit as the Scheme does the following to encourage a positive and forward thinking attitude to managing health, safety and welfare at work.

  • Brings delegates up to date with the principals of current legislation, Approved Codes of Practice and guidance, relative to the organisation of construction sites.
  • Develops skills in assessment, planning and implementation of safe systems and methods in the workplace.
  • Helps delegates to examine how far they meet their own responsibilities for health, safety and welfare at work.

26 Management of Lifting Operations

For those supervisors and managers who have a responsibility for lifting operations. They must have experience of the use of cranes, to meet BS7121 – Safe Use of Cranes.

27 Selection, Management and Control of Contractors

This is a course aimed at Supervisors, Managers and those who procure the services of contracting companies. The aim is to ensure that your company only uses contractors who are competent and have been pre-qualified through a vetting procedure.

28 Fire Risk Assessment

To give delegates an understanding of the basic process and need for undertaking fire risk assessment. This course also looks at the legislation which drives the need for this activity.

29 Fire Wardens and Marshall's

Following this course, delegates will have the knowledge to be able to undertake the roles of a Warden/Marshall, understanding that they have a pro-active role outside drills and emergencies.

30 Practical Risk Assessment

The Management of Health and Safety at Work Regulations 1999 require employers to carry out a suitable and sufficient assessment of risks arising from the presence of hazards in their workplace. This course provides delegates with the knowledge needed to carry this out.

31 Asbestos Awareness 

This course is designed to allow management and operatives to identify the presence of and understand the hazards presented by asbestos containing materials eg spray coatings; insulation board; cement products; pipe/plant lagging, etc and thereby ensure the risk of fibre release is minimised. 

Furthermore, this course is designed to enable delegates to:

       1.  avoid irrational responses

2.  prevent negligent attitudes

3.  ensure compliance with policy, procedures and the  Law

4.  ensure a prompt and accurate response to problems

5.  recognise their own level of competence

32 CDM Refresher and CDM Construction Regulations

The Construction Regulations are on the change again.  

It is proposed that a new unified set of regulations will be brought out later in 2005.  These regulations will bring together the Construction (Design and Management) Regulations and Construction (Health, Safety and Welfare) Regulations, implementing some significant changes.

This one day course provides construction professionals with an insight to these proposed changes.

33 CDM Design Risk Assessment

Design risk assessment as part of good design.

As has been shown by the recent HSE Initiative many designers still don't know or understand the duties and responsibilities under the Construction (Design and Management) Regulations.

A significant part of Regulation 13 requires designers to identify hazards and understand the risks to workers arising out of their designs and to look at the potential for eliminating or mitigation of risk at the design stage of a project.

This course aims to arm designers to do this effectively.

Engineering Services SKILLcard is affiliated to the pan-industry Construction Skills Certification Scheme (CSCS). The terms of affiliation ensure that Engineering Services SKILLcard complies with the requirements and standards of CSCS. There is no need, therefore, for separate registration with CSCS.
